{"id":611,"date":"2021-07-05T08:54:34","date_gmt":"2021-07-05T08:54:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/peopleforperegrines.org\/?page_id=611"},"modified":"2021-07-13T08:10:01","modified_gmt":"2021-07-13T08:10:01","slug":"peregrines-and-the-law","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/peopleforperegrines.org\/index.php\/peregrines-and-the-law\/","title":{"rendered":"Peregrines and the law"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-very-dark-grey-color has-text-color\">All wild UK birds, from the iconic robin to the beautiful puffin, are protected by the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.legislation.gov.uk\/ukpga\/1981\/69\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">1981 Wildlife and Countryside Ac<\/a>t<\/strong>.  This means that it is an offence (with certain exceptions) to:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Intentionally kill, injure or take any wild bird<\/li><li>Intentionally take, damage or destroy an active nest of any wild bird (in use or being built)<\/li><li>Intentionally take or destroy the egg of any wild bird<\/li><li>Use traps or similar items to kill, injure or take wild birds<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Peregrine falcons are a schedule 1 bird in the UK. This means that they have the highest level of protection. Schedule 1 means that in addition to the above legislation it is also &#8220;an offence to intentionally or recklessly disturb at, on or near an \u2018active\u2019 nest&#8221; without a special license. This ensures that the right people conserve peregrines the right way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-very-dark-grey-color has-text-color\">In England and Scotland, permits for ringing and nest recording are issued by the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bto.org\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>British Trust for Ornithology <\/strong><\/a>(BTO). Licences for other activities are issued directly from <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/organisations\/natural-england\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Natural England<\/strong><\/a> in England and <strong><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.scot\/\" target=\"_blank\">NatureScot<\/a><\/strong>  in Scotland. In Wales, all licences are issued directly by <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/naturalresources.wales\/splash?orig=%2f&amp;lang=cy\">Natural Resources Wales<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-very-dark-grey-color has-text-color\">Unfortunately, peregrines like other raptor species, still suffer from <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/peopleforperegrines.org\/index.php\/threats-to-peregrines\/\">threats and disturbances<\/a><\/strong> despite it being illegal activity.
